Cheapest used small car to own

30 september, 2020

Looking for a car is not simple and certainly there is a lot to take into account and count on. For those looking for a smaller car, we can now help a little extra along the way - we have compiled a cost analysis of the best-selling small cars with us.

TCO stands for "total cost of ownership" and means that you calculate what the car actually costs to own and not just buy. Because it is actually the case that there are some peripheral costs when it comes to driving. Our compilation includes costs for depreciation, tax, insurance, service and fuel after a period of 36 months and 4,500 miles driven.

Hyundai i20 and Renault Clio are cheapest

In the analysis, we have compared a used Renault Clio, Volkswagen Polo, Toyota Yaris, Kia Rio, Skoda Fabia, Peugeot 208 PureTech, Hyundai i20 and Ford Fiesta. And the cheapest to own turned out to be the Hyundai i20, with a mileage cost of SEK 22.6. Based on an annual mileage of 1,500 miles, this means a monthly cost of SEK 2,825. The Hyundai i20 is in the upper echelon of fuel costs but makes up for it with low insurance, service and depreciation costs.

For a cost under SEK 3,000 a month, we also find the Renault Clio (SEK 2,912/month). Just like the Hyundai i20, the Renault Clio has higher fuel costs than most of its competitors. Above all, the Renault Clio makes up for this with a low depreciation. Compared to the Toyota Yaris, which has the largest loss in value, the difference is as much as SEK 5,600 a year. The Hyundai i20 and Renault Clio are followed by the VW Polo, Kia Rio and Skoda Fabia, all with a monthly cost of just over SEK 3,000.

Money to save through research

The most expensive in the selection is the Ford Fiesta. Anyone who buys a three-year-old Ford Fiesta can count on a mileage cost of SEK 27 and an approximate monthly cost of SEK 3,375. That is SEK 550 more a month than the Hyundai i20. For the Ford Fiesta, it is mainly costs for depreciation and insurance that weigh heavily.

- Our calculation shows why you should always invest time in deciding which car to buy. Even when buying a small used car, there is money to be saved, says Daniel Odsberg, sales manager Kvdbil. The reduction in value is of course not comparable to when a new car rolls out of the garage, but it has an effect and we see that some models hold their value significantly better.

The costs of fuel and insurance are also something that should be looked at extra. It can make a difference of several hundreds of Swedish Krona per month between different brands and models.

About the survey
Kvdbil has calculated the TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) for a selection of Sweden's most popular small cars as used three-year-olds. This means that we have taken into account all costs that result from the purchase decision. In the comparison, a calculation has been made of the average cost per month after three years of ownership and approximately 4,500 miles of mileage, including fuel. The fuel cost is based on a fuel price of SEK 15/litre. Insurance cost and service cost are estimates based on a persona (male, Stockholm, 30s) and can vary greatly.
