The climate bonus is removed completely - so the used market is affected

8 marraskuu, 2022

Since Bonus malus was introduced in 2018, the regulations have changed several times. Fewer cars have come to be covered by the bonus, the bonus has been lowered and the malus has been raised. And despite the fact that an adjusted regulatory framework would take effect after the turn of the year, the Government now chooses to completely stop bonus payments for electric cars from November 9.

In its press release, the Government writes that: "The cost of owning and driving a climate bonus car is also beginning to be comparable to the cost of owning and driving a petrol or diesel car. State market introduction support is therefore no longer justified". However, the malus rules and rules on vehicle tax remain as decided.

This is how the used market is affected by the decision

Although the climate bonus only covers new car sales, it also has an impact on the used market.

"For those who want to buy an electric car, used cars will probably be more attractive than before, as the discount in the form of the climate bonus is removed from new car prices. And it is the cars with a lower price tag that are hit the hardest by the loss of the bonus, as the bonus accounted for a larger part of the cost. But the manufacturers have now come a long way in development and more affordable, electrified models should come soon," says Daniel Odsberg, sales manager Kvdbil.

More electric and charging hybrids to be expected

More and more electric and plug-in hybrids are being sold on the used market. Through the third quarter of this year, roughly 15,000 used electric cars and 25,000 used plug-in hybrids have changed hands, which corresponds to 4.5 percent of the entire used market. Despite this smaller share, it should be borne in mind that it is an increase of +30 percent compared to the first three quarters of 2021.

"In recent years, more and more people have chosen an electric car when buying a new car, and more and more electric and plug-in hybrids will therefore continue to reach the used market with each passing quarter. Since 2018, the manufacturers have also taken a stand and future powertrains will definitely be electrified, in time this will also be reflected on the used side" says Daniel Odsberg, sales manager at Kvdbil.
