When temperatures drop, cold weather and sub-zero conditions affect how your EV battery performs. Range and charging speed decrease because the battery works more slowly in cold weather. EV batteries are robust and built for Nordic climates. The cold isn't your enemy – it just requires a little planning. With the right routines, an electric car works just as reliably in January as in July. Here are 5 tips that make a difference.
Perhaps the most important habit is to pre-heat your electric car before setting off. This brings the battery up to temperature before you start driving, which improves range and means the car can recover braking energy efficiently from the very first kilometre. If the car is connected to a charger, the benefit is even greater – energy is drawn from the grid rather than from the battery. Not having to scrape ice and stepping straight into a warm car is a pleasant bonus!
A cold battery charges slowly. A warm battery charges efficiently. It's therefore wise to plug in the charging cable as soon as you get home after a drive.
Leaving the car sitting for long periods with a low charge in sub-zero temperatures is not a good idea. A battery performs best in the middle of its charge range, and in everyday use 30–80 percent is a sensible guideline. Below 30 percent the margins become tight, especially in cold weather when range can vary more than usual. At the same time, there's rarely any point in charging the battery to 100 percent for everyday driving.

If you're planning to fast charge, it's wise to pre-heat the battery. In many modern electric cars this happens automatically when you navigate to a charging station. A warmed-up battery can accept significantly higher power than a cold one.
At minus ten degrees, range can drop by up to 30 percent. This isn't because the battery has deteriorated, but because cabin heating demands energy, air and tyres create greater resistance, and battery chemistry is less efficient in the cold. It's physics – not a fault with the car.
