Here’s how we check your EV’s battery

How’s the battery doing? We’ve got the answer.

The battery is the most important component in an electric car – and it deserves special attention. That’s why we assess its health as part of our vehicle inspection. So you, as a buyer, know what to expect in terms of range, performance and lifespan. Read more here about how the test works and how we evaluate the results.

How do we assess battery health?

We measure the battery’s State of Health – an indicator that shows how much capacity remains compared to when it was new. It gives a clear picture of the battery’s remaining performance and lifespan. The State of Health is presented as a star rating, reflecting our overall assessment of the battery at the time of testing.

How we test the battery

When we inspect an electric car, we also assess the health of its battery. The test is carried out as part of our standard KVD test and doesn’t require any extra steps from you as a seller or buyer.

Here’s how it works:

  1. We connect our testing equipment to the car’s OBD2 port.

  2. The test runs instantly, and data is sent from the car to our analysis provider.

  3. The results are presented as a star rating.

What the stars mean

Three stars mean the battery has very high remaining capacity. You can expect range close to the car’s original, fast charging, and strong performance even in cold weather. The battery has a long remaining lifespan.

Two stars mean the battery has good remaining capacity. The range is still solid and charging is relatively quick, but performance may be slightly affected by cold. The battery should last for several more years.

One star means the battery has noticeably reduced capacity. Range is lower and charging is slower, especially in cold temperatures. The battery has a limited remaining lifespan and is best suited for shorter trips.

! (Exclamation mark) = Very low remaining battery capacity. Greatly reduced range and performance, slow charging, and sensitive to cold. May require workshop inspection. Limited usability.

? (Question mark) = Battery condition could not be read – usually because the car is too new or the manufacturer restricts access. The car has been test driven, charged and inspected as usual. Any issues will appear in our standard KVD report.

More than just the battery

Battery health is just one of many things we assess when testing cars at Kvdcars. Every car for sale undergoes a thorough inspection covering over 170 checkpoints. The KVD test is carried out by our own vehicle technicians at our facilities across Sweden.
